How do I pick a favorite book? Is it based on the plot, the characters, the style? Is there even such a thing as The One Book? And, it's especially hard to say "this is my most favorite book ever" when I know I still have a stack of 20 books or more waiting for me. What if my next favorite book is there?

My list is not definitive, and it can change at any given time, but for now these are the books that have left an indelible impression. These are the books that come to mind if someone were to ask me to list my ten most favorite books.

Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez

Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres

Perfume by Patrick Süskind

Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel

The Enchanted April by Elizabeth Von Arnim

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro

Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee

Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier
